Think of an organized closet as an extra hour of sleep in the morning.
Seeing what you have, and what needs to be cleared out is so rewarding!
You will not only save some time when choosing your outfit of the day, you will also achieve your ready to wear dream closet when you are done!

Looking inside your closet can be a bit overwhelming.
In order to make a precise clothing assessment, we need to start with a clean slate.
Start by removing everything from inside your closet, yes, every single thing!
Once everything is cleared out
The plan begins with a 3-step closet evaluation:
1. Keep
- Clothing that you wear on a daily basis.
2. Donate
- Clothing that is of no use to you anymore.
3. Alter
- Clothing you have hanging in there for years, that need adjustments.
- Pieces of clothing with some good qualities like a dress that can now we made into a skirt.
- Some buttons or zippers that can be used for something else.
(Sustainability is the way to go, and the fashion industry is slowly moving in that direction.)

Start by pulling, sorting an analyzing each piece of clothing!
Make a pile, or sort into boxes labeling them ‘keep, donate, alter’.
Approach each category separately.
Starting with the ‘Keep’ box.
Keep
The items in this category should be items that are timeless (always in style) and has no need for alterations.
Stay:
- You decide what stays and what goes.
- Ask yourself if you will wear it?
- How does it fit?
Organization:
- Keep items together in categories i.e. skirts, shirts, dresses etc.
- Shelf clothing items are: t shirts, night wear, lounge wear, active wear & sweaters.
Color:
- With each category, co-ordinate your clothing by color from light to dark.
- Color co-ordinating can be a bit confusing so it’s always good to have a color wheel in your closet if you don’t know where to put something.
Hangers:
- For a sleek and organized closet, having one type of hanger helps keep everything look well put together.
- I love black velvet hangers. (click here)

This will be the hardest part of your closet evaluation.
You will come across some sentimental pieces of clothing. Here are some tips to help you through this:
- If you have not worn it in 2 years, let it go!
- If you still have price tags on them, give it another try, it could be altered.
- If it does not fit, time to toss!
- Unless it's vintage, de-cluttering is the best thing you can do for yourself and your closet.
Alter

Having a great alternations person is a life saver!
Clothes that fit good, makes you feel good!
Here are some tips when looking for a good tailor:
- How long has this person been in business?
- Make sure they listen to what you want.
- Do they specialize in any type of work?
Example: Bridal or suits.
- Timeframe on alterations.
Give yourself the closet you have always wanted by completing this 3-step closet evaluation. You will not only feel organized, you will bring life back into your closet!
