Fashion Month & The New Normal

Happy Fashion Month!

If you follow fashion closely, you would already know that fashion month is the 4-week period that happens twice a year in February and September.

Fashion Month in February showing the Autumn/ Winter season and September showing the Spring /Summer season for the upcoming year.

Couture Week in January. Known as Paris Haute Couture Week.

Within this month, we have Fashion Week. One week in each of the major fashion capitals.

Starting with New York, then to London, Milan and ending in Paris Fashion Week.

Here you have fashion designers and fashion houses showing their latest collections for the current and upcoming season.

With the spread of the Corona Virus among us, this season and seasons to come would be like no other.

We have already seen designers and fashion houses get creative with their sets, digital shows, videos and look books. See DIOR SAVOIR-FAIRE

Though fashion week is still happening, it is not the same. Many guests such as influencers and celebs who usually grace the front row, are absent due to limitations on international travel.

This pandemic has affected everyone, including the fashion industry. As much as some people don’t see it as a business.

The fashion industry is a multibillion-dollar global enterprise with major economic and environmental factors.

The biggest questions right now are,

Is it that fashion weeks are going away? Are designers losing its influence on their customers? Is fashion week becoming less necessary in the wave of a trendless cycle?

What would have been an ongoing Fashion Month of shows and streetstyle. Some designers have opted out of the traditional seasonal calendar.

Brands such as Gucci and Saint Laurent have gone seasonless.

Meaning, they are setting their own schedule going forward, and not adhering to the traditional number of fashion shows held a year.

With fewer fashion shows and less product, the brands statement to go seasonless, goes in the right direction of sustainability in support of a less wasteful fashion industry.

Look out for my up coming post on Sustainability in the Fashion Industry.

The footprint on the industry is heavy, and the change is necessary both financially and environmentally.

As we come to the end of an unusual Fashion Month. We live in a digital era, where innovation is at its best, showing that the fashion industry will always stand tall with creativity and diversity with sustainability moving forward!
