As we head into September, my favorite season is approaching and that is Fall.
Fall fashion has always held a special place in my heart. I’m not sure if it’s because I grew up in a warm weather country and my style was limited to dressing seasonless-ly.
After leaving Trinidad in 2012 my move to Miami still did not give me the freedom to express my fall/winter fashion but it did give me the flexibility to be creative with my style (going to school for Fashion Marketing definitely helped) especially when the fashion seasons were changing.
My autumn wardrobe didn’t consist of boots and coats until I moved to London. Fast forward to the present, I am back in the humidity but I am still dressing for the Fall Season and so can you.
Focus on colors, fabrics and textures, rather than over then knee boots, leather jackets and cashmere scarfs.
We live in a time where designers are going seasonless, but not style-less.
Keep on scrolling to see how you can incorporate autumn fashion into your everyday style this season.
COLOR
Color is the easiest way to feel in season.
Whether you live in the Caribbean or Canada, the best way to incorporate a fall wardrobe is to play with color.
From brown hues, to burgundy or emerald green, mixing those rich jewel tones can really set your fall fashion mood.
FABRICS & TEXTURES
Warm weather? You can still pull off a heavier fabric in a shorter length or style.
Suede
Suede has been of the ‘it’ fabric for fall, it’s chic and can be worn in several ways. Choose from different jewel tone hues like a Bordeaux color for a richer look. From flared pants to purses to suede shoes you will find something to fit into your fall style. The great thing about Suede shoes is that you can wear them all year round, think ballet flats.
Leather
Wearing leather in a hot climate is all about balance. If you are feeling daring opt for a patent leather mini skirt or shorts paired with a light weight top and open toed shoes. There are so many ways to wear leather without feeling like it's sticking to your skin. Leather does not just consist of black leather jackets, choose styles in light brown hues to incorporate that fall/ winter fabric into your look. You will definitely bring the fall feels while keeping cool.
Metallic
Metallic is a texture that you would wear later on in the year but you can still mix materials and accessories by combining a leather satchel or strappy heels to get that look. From an eye-catching shirtdress to a must-have pleated skirt, the shiny fabric is everywhere towards the winter season.
Corduroy
The 70’s have been on trend and will continue into fall. Get yourself a corduroy set in a neutral hue for a quick-and-easy look you can wear anywhere. For warmer climates I would recommend going for a for a wide leg silhouette and style with a silky blouse. Corduroy can also be incorporated into your accessories with a baguette bag, scrunchies or hats.
Knit
If you’re thinking sweaters, think again. Knit dresses are what I am thinking for incorporating knits into a warm climate for fall fashion. From floor-sweeping flared maxis to Nineties-inspired ribbed slips you are guaranteed to turn heads. From dresses, to cardigans, vests and sets don't limit your Knit self.
Velvet
Add some color and texture to your autumn ensembles with velvet. This luxurious fabric can be reworked to suit the needs of the climate you are in. Velvet is now making a bolder impact in the form of tailoring. From robes, shorts and tops in vibrant jewel tones your options are endless to incorporate this fabric to your warm weather fall fashion.
ACCESSORIES
If you're not into the fall fabrics, then accessorizing is your best friend. Remember what they say, if all else fails, accessorize, accessorize, accessorize! Adding ankle boots (wear with shorts), silk scarves and brimmed hats to your fall looks. Accessories are extremely diverse, from puffy pillow-like bags to oversized sunglasses and hair scarves, these are the types of accessories you can integrate into your wardrobe for fall fashion in warm weather countries.
Remember this, you don’t have to keep up with the latest trends to be stylish. Everything you need you may already have in your closet, and if you do need that staple piece to add to your wardrobe make sure it’s a timeless, transitional piece. Sustainability is key towards the future and the future of fashion.
